Facial Fractures Flashcards
What should you evaluate with patients with facial trauma?
Airway
Breathing
Circulation
Vital signs
Bleeding
Neurological status, neck
Other non-facial injuries
what is a hyphema? (Subconjunctival occymosis)
Direct ocular injury.
Half circle of blood around iris. Indication of severe injury to the skull
How do you test for alveolar fractures?
Test mobility
Wiggle the whole maxilla to see if the mid face moves too
True or false.. medial canthral ligaments are attached to the lacrimal bones.
True
Where is the most common fracture in the mandible? What about second and third most common?
1) subcondylar
2) angle of mandible
3) symphysis
What are four types of mandibular fractures?
Green stick
Simple
Comminuted (shattered)
Compound (broken bone and through soft tissues
What is the difference between unfavorable and favorable mandible fractures?
Unfavorable when fracture is parallel to masseter because the masseter pulls the fracture apart
Favorable when the fracture goes towards the masseter superiorily cause the masseter will pull the bone together
What are Le forte I, II and III maxillary fractures?
I = just maxillary alveolus
II = includes medial orbit (no zygoma involvement)
III = the entire maxilla and zygoma
True or false… arch fractures may prevent the mandible from opening
True
What is an orbital blowout fracture?
Fracture of the floor of the orbit due to impact to the eye
What is intermaxillary fixation?
Arch bars
Wiring the jaw shut
