Face perception Flashcards
Do we se the same system for upright faces and objects?
no, if we did the abilities in both would always correlate
but they don’t
evidence for GOOD faceP, BAD object- object agnosia
Patient CK/Behrmann 94: recovered from head injury other than OA; views objects as feature based not hollistic, uses context and features to identify
Moscovitch 97: compared to controls; good face rec and animal faces
How does the arcimbaldo effect affect OA patients?
faces of objects; can only see face not objects, ‘terra’ when animals used can start to see animals slowly, but better than controls at seeing face above objects
Why is face-inversion different?
harder to recognise faces when inverted so rely on object processing skills (part based processing)- Moscovitch 97; CK severely impaired compared to controls of inverted faces so obvious dissociation, same with split/abnormal faces
evidence for BAD faceP, GOOD object- Prosopagnosia
PP (coined by bodamer 46)- can be congenital or acquired
Edward (duchaine 04)- 100% object rec, but severe facial recog; rely on features and indexical information
Tests on PP
Abelson- used greebles which resemble demands of face networks: introducd with names and families; did as well as controls so SPECIFIC to faces
McNeil and Warrington 9: WJ; pp from strokel sheep farmer better than controls and sheep experts at recognising sheep (human face specific)
where is face processing in the brain?
fusiform face area (kanwisher 97/barton 2002)
associated with right medial occipitotemporal lesions,
focal region in the right fusiform gyrus= FFA; doesnt occur in more anterior bilateral temporal lesions
Derenzi 97; not always correlated with PP
is face recognition on a continuum?
Russel 2009; there is a even distr. of good and bad recognisers; ‘super recognisers’ better than controls on before-famous test
Is face recognition heretable?
Zhu 2010: MZ/DZ chinese twins between 7-19y; HE: nearly 40%; similar on inversion test (high concordance) and CFE HE of 31%
What is the composite face effect (CFE)
holistic representation; harder to identify one half of combination face if they are aligned rather than misalligned
Solomon-harris 2013: TMS for occipital face area (Ass with face rec)
Found participants’ ability to categorize intact versus scrambled faces was unaffected, however face identity discrimination was significantly impaired. using TMS
