issues with studying careers?

A

should be longitudinal but from when? careers only make sense in retrospect, can change or be diverse, best to find something (eg doctors) who are going to be stable over long period and one employee (NHS)

A

followed 6000 med schoool applicants; used questionnaires to test in different years of uni, then followed up in 2002 and 2009- regular tstig was beneficial to study

A

RIASEC multidimensional scales (realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, conventional) furnham added charectoristics eg realistic=doer, artistic= creator
- measured by qustionnaire, used to map and plot towards careers on a graph

  • can apply dimensions to all careers (Prediger 82), aso use Conformity and Sociability dimensions (Hogan 83), effective as regarded as “types”
  • can be extnded for different professions eg medical career mapping (petrides and Mcmanus)- Individual differences scaling (INDSCAL)- remap circumplex to correlate with personality

How are careers chosen? - Gottfredson 1981

A

not at random, they are a result of circumscription and compromise; multidimensional mapping. Prestige level (Y) vs sextype rating (X) – mentalise RIASEC map and set ‘tolerable boundaries’ result in circumscribed zone and then compromise

when is best to start studying?

A

uk start constraining options at 16 from GCSEs. Francis Right- START study 2012: from year 6- transition to secondary school; females initially more ambitious in year 6, options ranged a lot and many not realistic

A

Horgan nad balke found high corr. with Big 5; neuro doesn’t correlate with choice but does to response in a job
Armstrong and Anthony 09: RIASEC and BIG5; 6 separate facets eg deliberation and self discipline; P correlates with facets of career choice.
