Face Negotiation Theory Flashcards
3 Assumptions
1) Self-identity (the image we want others to have of us in their head) is important in interpersonal interactions with individuals.
2) The management of conflict is mediated by face and culture.
3) Certain acts threaten one’s projected self-image.
Term: Face
one’s self-image in the presence of others. The public image we try to display.
Term: Facework
the communication behaviors that we use to manage our face and other’s face. It’s what we do to try to create images of ourselves in someone else’s mind.
Ex. First dates, interviews, public speaking.
Face-saving: preventing/stopping embarrassment/vulnerability
Face-restoration: damage has been done to make you embarrassed, what you do after lost of face.
Term: Locus of facework
Has to do with whether your behavior or communication behavior is directed at maintaining your face or maintaining the face of the other
- supporting or attack a person’s face
Term: Face Valence
Positive/negative message about your face or the other’s face
Cultural dimension: Individualistic
The norm regarding face is: you are to promote your face (self-face oriented cultures)
- very easy to feel isolated
- freedom of expression
Collectivistic (OTHER):
group goals are evaluated in the individual’s goals
- it’s a lil about conformity
- make sure you fit in
- uniqueness is not desirable
- it’s all about we and us
- never alone
- doesn’t accept freedom of expression
Conflict management: Dominating (connected to INDIVIDUALISTIC)
Our go-to move is avoidance
Dominating: looking to beat you in this conflict. Not stopping till there’s clearly a winner or loser.
It’s a win-lose
Conflict management: Integrating/Obliging (connected to COLLECTIVISITIC)
We can all win, we can have it all.
