Face Lecture Flashcards
Purpose of face
Protects openings in the face
What is the face a framework for (3 things)?
Nasal cavity Eyes (Orbital cavity) Oral (Buccal) Cavity
Purpose of muscles on face
To open or close the openings (holes) on the face
Assist with facial expression
Muscles of the face
Closes and opens the openings of the face (sphincta)
What muscle is above lip, elevates lip, contains word “levator”
Levator
Where is the Occipito-frontalis
Fromt he forehead across the top of the head
Hoe is skin connected to face?
Loose connective tissue (why our face feels ‘loose’ - like our scalp)
Muscles of facial expression (3 things)
Signal mood
Open and close openings
Chewing and speech
Where is the Extra-ocular
Around the eyes
Where is the Orbicularis oculi?
Around the eyes
Where is the •Levator palpebrae superioris
Around the eyes
Where is the Compressor naris (nasalis)?
Around the nose
Where is the Dilator naris (nasalis)?
Around the nose
Where is the Orbicularis oris?
Around the mouth
Where is the buccinator?
Cheek
What muscles pulls the lip up (like a snarl)
Levator labii superioris alaeque nasi
Muscle used to smile (elevate lips)
Levator labii superioris
Muscle in neck used to pull a ‘horror face’
Platysma
Other muscles used to dilate (open) the mouth (x4)
* Zygomaticus minor
* Zygomaticus major
* Levator anguli oris
* Risorius
MUSCLES OF MASTICATION - attached to the ????????
Used for:
Mandible (jaw)
Used for movement (chewing and biting)
Stabilises and secure the mandible
Determines direction of mandibular movements
What are the MUSCLES OF MASTICATION
(More Tea Less Milk)
- Masseter
- Temporalis
- Lateral pterygoid
- Medial pterygoid
What is the space between lips/cheeks & alveolar processes (bone containing tooth sockets)
ORAL VESTIBULE
Where is medial & posterior to alveolar arches
Oral Cavity (or Buccal cavity)
(inside the mouth)
What is the upper jaw called?
Maxilla
Lower jaw
mandible
What are alveloar processes
teeth sockets
What is on the roof of the mouth?
Hard palate
Soft palate
What is posteria in the oral cavity?
Palatoglossal arches
Palatopharyngeal arches
Palatine tonsil (what we know commonly as tonsils)
What’s the dangly bit at the back?
Uvula
What joins the lip and the tongue?
Frenulum of lip
Frenulum of tongue or lingual frenulum
What are the salivary glands called and where are they?
- Parotid – near upper teeth
- Submandibular – under tongue
- Sublingual – floor of mouth
What is this?
What kind of joint?
What is the purpose of the disc (meniscus) in the synovial cavity?
What ligaments support this joint?
TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT (TMJ)
Synovial modified hinge joint
smooths movements, shock absorber, prevents friction
the temporomandibular ligament and the sphenomandibular ligament.
What causes motor innervation (muscle movement) of the face?
Facial Nerve
What causes motor innervation (muscle movement) of mastication?
Trigeminal Nerve
What arteries supply the face?
Common carotid divides into two - internal carotid and external carotid (external carotid supplies the face)
External Carotid gives off branches including:
superficial temporal which supplies the scalp.
facial which supplies the face
Maxillary which supplies the TMJ
What is the main vein that drains the face?
External jugular equivalent to external carotid artery - most of the smaller veins in the face lead to the external jugular
