F214 2.1 - Excretion Flashcards
Hepatocytes
Cuboid shaped cells that make up the liver
Homeostasis
Maintaining the internal environment despite external changes
Hepatic Portal Vein
Vein carrying deoxygenated blood from small intestine to liver
Hepatic Vein
Vein carrying deoxygenated blood from liver to vena cava
Hepatic Artery
Artery carrying oxygenated blood from the aorta to the liver
Vena Cava
The body’s main vein. Returns blood to right side of the heart
Aorta
The body’s main artery. Sends blood around the body from the left side of the heart
Bile Duct
Carries bile from liver cells to gall bladder
Gall bladder
Attached to liver: stores bile
Bile
Alkaline fluid; composed of bile salts, bilirubin and biliverdin (breakdown pigments from Hb)
Digestive/excretory functions of bile
Bile salts help emulsify fats in small intestine
Liver lobule
Group of cells (hepatocytes) in the liver
Inter-lobular vessel
Branch of hepatic artery
Intra-lobular vessel
Branch of hepatic vein
Sinusoid
Pool of blood in between the liver lobules
