Q

other sociologists delphy & leonard is similar/linked to?

A

Delphy and Leonard’s work does build on earlier research, such as that of Ann Oakley, who concluded that working women had a dual burden of paid work and unpaid domestic work. Later, Duncombe and Marsden developed the idea of a triple shift where emotional work is added to domestic work and paid work.

Q

what is domestic labour?

A

the domestic labour that females provided at home with wages outside of the home e.g cooks, nannies
deemed to be non-productive when performed in the home, in wider society contributes to the economic output of the nation.
home is not a refuge from work for women but rather an economic microsystem of its own.

Q

What work is expected from mothers?

A

work performed by women is ‘invisible’ and forms part of a set of expectations of being a wife and mother
domestic labour is gendered and when males perform tasks at home it is seen as ‘helping out’ not a duty.

Q

criticism of delphy and leonard

A

research ignores the role of capitalism in shaping the economics of ‘gendered labour’ as womens labour are often being lower status than male labour
the role of dual burden and triple shift is taken on lone families without the presence of males
dunne found there to be greater equality in domestic labour in homosexual relationships
