e1 durkheim Flashcards
what does durkheim think the two main functions of education are? why?
social solidarity + specialist skills because education system helps to create social solidarity by transmitting culture form one gen to the next and schools act as society in miniture preparing us 4 society.
what is social solidarity?
ties that bind people together in society.
what time was durkhiem writing at and what was the old type of social solidarity?
durkheim was writing at a time of dramatic social change following the impacts of the industrial revolution, the industrial revolution created mass urbanisation, industrialisation , the beginning of secularisation and the fall of the monarchs.
traditional mechanical social solidarity which was typically of the pre industrial era people living in small community believing in the same religion working together.
what does durkheim think traditional solidarity is being replaced by?
he thinks its being replaced by organic solidarity as ppl form bonds with those of similar experience whether that was work, neighbourhoods. organic solidarity was threatening the traditional bonds of society so durkheim proposed the state education system promoted social solidarity.
how does the education system achieve social solidarity?
communal gatherings such as assemblies, prize giving ceremonies that promote values of the community.
social cohesion such as enrichment sports activities, and house systems give a sense of unity.
criticism on durkhiem view on school ?
marxists (who’s value and heritage are being being passed on?) those of the ruling class
stephen ball says that the ethnocentric curriculum focused on England, fails to teach history and literature from other continents
how is teaching of specialist skills useful?
provides the next generation with the skills they need in a diverse workforce.
how does the education system achieve teaching of specialist skills?
core knowledge - national curriculum (literacy + numeracy)
specialist knowledge - subject choice at alevel
vocational skills btec or tlevel’s
additional funding for maths students grade 3
standardised assesments SATS GSCE
how did the education system change in 2013?
micheal gove reforms to curriculum 2013 began with history. removes european & american history focusing on traditional british centric to tecahing history.
criticism of tecahing specilaist skills
marxists argue that students are taught fragmented knowledge that allows them to perform specific roles. students are often overqualified for roles which creates a reserve army of labour in job markets. as a result of the job competition wages are driven down.
high levels of youth employment NEETs (not in education employement training) in the uk is higher than other western countries.
feminists say girls are discouraged from subjects
what other function of education does durkheim believe in?
school acts as society in miniture teaching social rules and how to abide by them. learning to interact within a set of rules is learning how to function in society, children learn about punishment and with that learn self-discipline.
criticism on social solidarity sociologists
Hargreaves (1982) has argued that the education system encourages individualism and competition rather than social solidarity and shared values. Educational norms discourage collaborative learning (instead seeing it as cheating or copying) and instead encourages individuals to try and beat each other: the opposite of social solidarity.
