gathers appropriate equipment & assembles
pressure manometer, flowmeter, attach mouthpiece or facemask to pap device
checks physicians orders & scans chart for diagnosis
identifies pt., self, depart, explains purpose of procedure
utilizes & maintains standard precautions as required
explains/instructs pt. on therapy & confirms pt.’s understanding
positions pt. for accessibility & comfort (sit pt. up)
assess pt. (HR, RR, BS) before therapy
assembles equipment & set initial flow
5 LPM at gas source
explains proper breathing technique
inhale deeply but not to TLC, then actively exhale using diaphragm
adjust flow to achieve expiratory pressure of
10-20 cm H2O
place mouthpiece in mouth assuring tight seal
pt. should do 10-20 breaths (repititions)
coach pt. throughout process & correct technique as needed
encourage pt. to cough (splint/huff cough technique may be required)
observe sputum production noting
amount, color, consistency
monitors pt. t/o therapy for side effects
repeat above cycle 4-8 time
not to exceed 20 minutes
allow periods of rest/recovery between attempts as needed
reassesses pt. after procedure
HR, RR, BS

cleans area & equipment
stores equipment appropriately
disposes PPE, w/g
