Eysenck Flashcards
Was Eysenck’s Theory based on nature or nurture?
Nature
What did Eysenck believed caused crime?
High levels of extroversion, neuroticism and psychoticism.
Extroversion
Social, friendly, open and talkative.
Neuroticism
Anxious, frustrated, jealous, scared, lonely.
Psychoticism
Impulsive, uncaring, aggressive.
What is the biological explanation for extroversion?
Reticular activating system restricts stimuli from the environment so cerebral cortex becomes under-aroused so, they seek stimulation like crime.
What is the biological explanation for neuroticism?
Limbic system is over-aroused so they get into patterns of behaviour to reduce anxiety like crime.
What is the biological explanation for psychoticism?
High levels of dopamine, more likely to commit violent crimes.
Criticisms of Eysencks’s Theory
Ignores nurture, unlikely criminals all criminals have same personality, suggests criminals don’t have control over their behaviour.
