eyes Flashcards
cornea
Light enters the eye through the cornea and strikes photoreceptors in the retina
lens
The lens helps focus light on the retina (accommodation)
sclera
The sclera protects the eye and helps to maintain its shape.
choroid
The choroid layer contains blood vessels which nourish the retina.
rods and cones
The retina is composed of rods (sensitive to light intensity) and cones (sensitive to wavelengths of colour)
fovea centralis
The fovea centralis contains a high concentration of cones, while the blind spot (the point at which the optic nerve connects to the retina) contains neither rods nor cones.
pupil
Ciliary muscles control the size of the pupil, allowing more/less light to reach the retina
iris
The iris controls how much light actually enters the eye through the lens.
optic nerve
Photoreceptors relay sensory impulses to the occipital lobe of the brain via the optic nerve
