endocrine glands Flashcards
What does the hypothalamus/pituitary complex regulate?
The hypothalamus regulates the pituitary,
What is the pituitary gland responsible for?
responsible for releasing a number of hormones involved in growth & metabolism, development, reproduction, and other critical functions.
What happens when hormones are released from the hypothalamus and pituitary?
They are then referred to as Tropic hormones, meaning they stimulate other glands to release other hormones.
Postier
and releases hormones produced by the hypothalamus:
Oxytocin
ADH
Anterior
pituitary synthesizes:
human growth hormone
prolactin
thyroid-stimulating hormone
adrenocorticotropic hormone
Gonadotropin (follicle-stimulating hormone, and leutinizing hormone
Thyroid
The thyroid often referred to as “the metabolic thermostat,”- releases hormones which regulate metabolic activity; produces thyroxine, calcitonin
Parathyroid
consists of four glands attached to the thyroid; produces parathyroid hormone
Adrenal medulla
produces epinephrine and norepinephrine, involved in the short-term stress response
Adrenal cortex
produces glucocorticoids (e.g. cortisol) and mineralocorticoids (e.g. aldosterone), involved in the long-term stress response
islet cells of the pancreas
also secrete hormones into the bloodstream responsible for glucose regulation
Beta cells secrete insulin, alpha cells secrete glucagon
