acute infectious process involving abscess formation of eyelid
What is the other word for stye?
hordeolum
What are the different types of stye?
External - inf of glands of Zeis or Moll
Internal - inf of Meibomian glands, may leave chalazion
What organisms typically cause?
staph aureus
s epidermidis
What is a stye w out infection termed as
meibomian cyst
What are chalazions?
lump caused by blockage of the meibomian gland
How do chalazions present
firm painless lump
How do styes present?
acute painful localised eyelid swelling developing over several days
What is the management of styes?
Warm compress
Incision and drainage using sterile needle
dont give abx unless conjuncitvitis
What is the management of chalazion?
Usually self limiting
Warm compress
? incision + curettage
What is blepharitis?
inflammation of the eyelid margins
What are the causes of blepharitis?
Dry eyes lead to irritation!
Meibomian gland dysfunction
Seborrhoeic dermatitis/staph inf
wHat is blepharitis associated wit?
rosacea
What is the function of the meibomian glands?
secrete oil on to the eye surface to prevent rapid evaporation of the tear film
How does blepharitis present?
Bilateral
Burning, itching red margins
Foreign body sensation
Crusting of eyelids
