Eyelid and Third Eyelid Flashcards
Fibrocartilage layer of eyelid that contains the meibomonian gland. Also the holding layer in surgical eye closure.
Tarsus
Glands in the tarsal layer of the eyelid that produces lipid or sebum to the tear film.(most external layer of the three-layered tear film)
Meibomian glands
the area outlined by the upper and lower eyelid margins
Palpebral fissure
Drooping of eyelid mostly the upper eyelid caused by sympathetic denervation to the eyelid.
Ptosis
incomplete eyelid closure/coverage of the eyeball.
Lagophthalmos
Identified by the ‘gray line’ of meibomian gland orifices. important when closing the eyelid surgically.
Eyelid margin
Rolling of the eyelid margin such that hairs are touching the ocular surface.
Entropion
Outward rolling of the eyelids.
Ectropion
spasm of the orbicularis oculi muscle resulting in eyelid closure(squinting)
Blepharospasm
Surgical procedure in which the eyelids are sutured together.
Tarsorrhaphy
incomplete eyelid closure and globe coverage.
Lagophthalmos
Hair growing from normal skin reach the corneal/conjuctival surface(Technically entropion causes this)
Trichiasis
cilia(eyelashes) which emerge from the meibomian glands.
Distichia
cilia(eyelashes) proturding through palpebral conjunctiva causing pain and corneal ulceration.
Ectopic cilia
