Q

Skin/Patch Test

A

● Client must be tested 24-48 hours before treatment

● As many clients are sensitive to products, this procedure enables you to ascertain if the client is allergic to the tint

● Wipe over the skin with antiseptic to remove any products or grease

● Mix a small amount of the tint with the peroxide and place it in the crease of the elbow or behind the client’s ear

● Leave to develop for a few minutes and then wipe off the excess

● Whilst the tint is developing advise the client of the possible results

● Make a record of the skin test and ask the client to sign

Q

Patch Test Outcome

A

● Positive reaction –irritation, redness or swelling.
● If this occurs the tinting treatment can not proceed and the client should be informed to apply a soothing lotion and cancel their appointment
● This does not mean that the client will always be allergic to the tint as hormones influence the sensitivity of the skin
● The client may return for another skin test 6 weeks later to see if they are still allergic

● Negative reaction - the skin appears normal and the client may go ahead with the tinting treatment

Q

Importance of making record of the patch test

A

● It is important that you make a record of the skin test and ask the client to sign as confirmation for insurance purposes
● If the client was to have an adverse reaction to the treatment and try to claim from the salon your insurers would require details compensation of the records
● This would be considered important evidence to show that all reasonable care had been taken when assessing if the client was suitable for treatment

Q

Colour choice

A

When making a decision about the colour of tint to use for the eyelash or eyebrow tint you should consider the following points:

● Mascara or brow pencil colour normally worn by the client

● Client’s hair colour – try and match to the colour of the clients roots

● Client’s natural lash or brow colour

● Result required by the client i.e. natural or defined

A

● This hair colour can be resistant and so would need from 12-15 minutes development time on the lashes and 5 minutes on the eyebrows

● Please be aware that if there are any pure white hairs these may need up to 15 minutes to tint

● A popular colour choice would be a grey or brown tint

Q

Fair

A

● Due to the hairs being light in colour the tint will need to be left on the lashes for 10-12 minutes

● However, on the eyebrows the colour will develop very quickly so the tint should be applied and removed immediately

● A natural colour choice would be brown or brown/black

Q

Contra-actions

A

● Erythema and allergic reaction

● Quite often a small amount of tint enters into the eye and this causes a stinging sensation. If this occurs the eye will need flushing with cold water to remove the tint

After Care

A

● If there are any problems, the client should contact the salon
● Advise the client not to rub the eyes after a lash tint
● Swimming ie chlorine will cause tint to fade
● Wearing sunglasses will also prolong the colour of the tint
● Wearing sunglasses will prevent screwing the eyes up/frowning
● Return for treatment in 4-6 weeks time (4 weeks for brows, 6 weeks for lashes)
● Provide advice on how to correctly remove eye make-up – avoid rubbing the eye area, use gentle circular motions
● Incorrect eye make-up removal can cause premature wrinkling and irritation to the skin surrounding the eye area
● Provide advice on how to deal with any contra-actions

Q

Tinting Products

A

● The tint is available in a gel or cream formulation, in a variety of colours: grey, brown, black and blue/black

● It is a special tint which is suitable for use on the eye area as it contains gentle ingredients. Hair tint must never be used on the eye area

● Hydrogen peroxide no stronger than 3% or 10 vol is used to activate the tint. Anything stronger could burn or irritate the skin

17
Q

How the Tint works

A

● Eyelash tint is mixed with 10 vol hydrogen peroxide in order to activate the tint

● The tint is applied and the small molecules enter the hair, whilst the tint is oxidising the molecules swell and fix into the hair

● The hydrogen peroxide is the oxidising agent that activates the tint

● The process begins as soon as the mixed tint comes into contact with the air and will stop being effective after about 20 minutes

18
Q

Mixing the Tint

A

● The tint should be mixed with hydrogen peroxide using an orange stick until it forms a smooth paste

● You must use a non-metallic bowl otherwise the metal would act as a catalyst causing a chemical reaction to
occur between the tint and the bowl

● Only mix the tint as you need it as it starts to develop
straight away and is only effective for about 20 minutes

19
Q

Tips for a successful result

A

● Protect trolley surfaces from the tint with a disposable covering
● Always apply sufficient petroleum jelly to the surrounding skin
● Red hairs and white hairs are more resistant to the tint and so the tint will need to be developed for longer, usually up to 15 minutes.
● When performing an eyebrow tint and shape the eyebrows should be tinted first. Try not to apply tint to the hairs that both you and the client have agreed need removing as the tint may catch the skin slightly and when the hairs are tweezed out the tint will be visible.
● When performing an eyebrow tint the finished result should be slightly darker than desired as tint will stain the skin slightly under the eyebrows. This will be cleansed off and disappear within a few days which will lighten the result

20
Q

Tips for a successful result

A

● If skin staining occurs use a professional tint remover and then wipe over with damp cotton wool
● If it does not come off do not panic, although you have not produced a satisfactory result, reassure the client that the tint will fade off the skin during the cleansing process within 24-48 hours
● When removing a tint on a very hot day it must be removed very quickly from the skin as the heat speeds up the development process and can cause skin staining
● Blue/black tint is the darkest colour and does not appear blue when applied
● Always check if the eyebrow height is even, as you can try to even them up by applying the tint slightly higher or lower on one brow
● If the client requires clearly defined lower lashes then apply the tint to the lower lashes first whilst the client looks upwards

21
Q

Why the result could be ineffective

A

● Using products with an expired shelf life
● Mixing the tint too soon
● Incorrectly mixing the tint
● Grease or make-up being left on the skin – acts as a barrier
● Accidentally applying petroleum jelly to the hairs
● The client’s eyes watering during the lash tinting procedure
● Eyelashes being very short and disappearing behind the eye shields
● Scar tissue or missing lashes/brows
● The client may screw their eyes up when you apply the lash tint, causing the skin to cover the lashes
● The client may uncomfortable during the treatment and ask you to remove the tint early
● Insufficient selection of tint colours
