Eye - Structure Flashcards
Cornea
The transparent front part of the eye that covers the iris and pupil. It helps to focus incoming light onto the retina.
Pupil
The black circular opening in the center of the iris that regulates the amount of light entering the eye.
Iris
The colored part of the eye that controls the size of the pupil and, consequently, the amount of light that reaches the retina.
Ciliary Body
Contains the ciliary muscle, which changes the shape of the lens to focus on near or distant objects.
Lens
A transparent structure behind the iris that focuses light onto the retina.
Sclera
The white, outer layer of the eyeball that provides protection and structure.
Retina
The light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye that contains rod and cone cells. Rods detect light and dark, while cones detect color.
Choroid
The vascular layer between the retina and the sclera that provides oxygen and nutrients to the eye.
Fovea
A small pit in the retina that contains a high concentration of cone cells and is responsible for sharp central vision.
Optic Disc
The point where the optic nerve exits the eye; it is also known as the blind spot because it lacks photoreceptors.
Optic Nerve
Transmits visual information from the retina to the brain.
Medial and Lateral Rectus Muscles
These muscles control the horizontal movement of the eye. The medial rectus moves the eye inward, while the lateral rectus moves it outward
