Diseases and Disorders Flashcards
Rabies
A viral disease that causes inflammation of the brain in humans and other mammals. Transmitted through bites or scratches.
Ringworm
A fungal infection of the skin, hair, or nails, characterised by circular, red, itchy patches. Spread through direct or indirect contact.
Leptospirosis
A bacterial disease affecting animals and humans, often transmitted through contact with contaminated water or soil.
Distemper
A viral disease affecting dogs, causing fever, coughing, and neurological symptoms. Spread through airborne exposure.
Parvovirus
A highly contagious viral disease affecting dogs, causing severe gastrointestinal distress. Transmitted through contact with infected faeces.
Salmonella
A bacterial infection causing diarrhoea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Transmitted through contaminated food or water.
Foot and Mouth
A highly contagious viral disease affecting livestock, causing fever and blisters. Spread through direct and indirect contact.
Toxoplasma gondii

Bluetongue
A viral disease transmitted by insects, affecting ruminants like sheep and cattle, causing fever, swelling, and haemorrhages.
Giardia
A protozoan parasite causing giardiasis, resulting in diarrhoea and gastrointestinal discomfort. Transmitted through contaminated water.
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)
A viral infection in cats, similar to HIV in humans, causing immune system suppression. Spread through bites and scratches.
Tapeworms
Endoparasites that live in the intestines of animals, causing weight loss and digestive issues. Transmitted through ingestion of infected fleas or meat.
Ticks
Ectoparasites that attach to the skin of animals and humans, potentially transmitting diseases like Lyme disease. Removed manually or with treatments.
Cushing’s Disease
An endocrine disorder caused by excessive cortisol production, leading to symptoms like weight gain and lethargy.
Myxomatosis

Laminitis
A painful inflammatory condition of the tissues (laminae) bonding the hoof wall to the pedal bone in horses and ponies.
Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)
A prion disease in cattle causing neurological symptoms and spongy degeneration in the brain. Known as ‘mad cow disease’.
Diabetes mellitus
A metabolic disorder characterised by high blood sugar levels due to insulin deficiency or resistance. Requires management through diet and medication.
E. Coli
A bacterial infection causing severe stomach cramps, diarrhoea, and vomiting. Transmitted through contaminated food or water.
Leptospirosis
A bacterial disease transmitted through contact with urine from infected animals, causing flu-like symptoms and, in severe cases, organ damage.
Fleas
Small, flightless insects that live off the blood of mammals and birds, causing itching and discomfort. Can transmit diseases to hosts.
Hypothyroidism
An endocrine disorder where the thyroid gland is underactive, resulting in symptoms like weight gain, lethargy, and hair loss.
Brucellosis
A bacterial infection transmitted from animals to humans, causing fever, joint pain, and fatigue. Often spread through contaminated animal products.
