What is Retinopathy?

A
  • When the retina is not clear due to leakage or damage of blood vessel in the eye
  • Caused usually by long standing BGL

Management of retinopathy?

A
  • Long term monitoring of the eye annual exams
  • injection of medication into the eye, stop angiogenesis
  • Laser to seal up leaking blood vessels
  • Control BGL through diet, exercise and medication

What is Glaucoma?

A
  • Optic nerve dies over time leading to vision loss
  • Due to increased pressure in the eye
  • Cause unknown, related to aqueous humour drainage
  • Increase in pressure puts more pressure on weakest area in the eye which is the optic nerve
  • Progresses peripherally then comes to centre

Management of Glaucoma?

A
  • Have eye exam
  • High blood pressure and BGL may contribute
  • Diabetes double the chances of Glaucoma
  • Drugs such as eye drops to decrease pressure
  • Laser surgery to open meshwork increase drainage or punch hole in iris to improve drainage

What is macula degeneration?

A
Macula degeneration
-Begins centrally usually pt complains of black spots in the centre of vision makes it hard to read 
-Two types dry and wey
Dry
-Most common, slow progression
-Protein stuck behind the retina leading to atrophy
Wet
-Sudden onset 
-Leakage of fluid in the eye

  • Injection in the eye to stop build up of fluid
  • nutrition rich in green leafy vegetables
  • eye vitamins
  • don’t smoke
