Eye anatomy Flashcards
Spherical and avascular white dense connective tissue that covers the glove posterior to cornea
Sclera
Sclera function:
- It’s toughness protects the delicate optic/neural structures such as the retina
- maintains shape of the globe so that retinal image is undisturbed
- provides attachment for extraocular muscles to rotate the globe and the ciliary muscle to accommodate the lens
“Window of the eye”
Cornea
Cornea function:
-strong connective tissue that covers anterior 1/6 surface of eye
Focusing element of the eye (more powerful than lens). Light enters the cornea and enters the aqueous humor before reaching retina
Lens
a specialized epithelial tissue that fine tunes image projected on retina. It is transparent and has a high refractive power that focuses on nearer objects
‘The choroid capillary bed nourishes what structures in the eye?
photoreceptors and outer retina
Order from outermost layer to innermost layer: choroid, retina , sclera
sclera, choroid, retina
controls the refractive power of lens
ciliary muscle of ciliary body
produces the aqueous humor filling the anterior chamber
vascular component of the ciliary body
nourishes the cornea and lens
aqueous humor
thick gelatinous substance filling the space between the back of the lens and the surface of the retina
vitreous humor
contains neurons that absorb light and process visual information in the images and sends that information to the brain
retina
oval spot containing a yellowish pigment (xantrophy) and supports high acuity
Macula
small depression at the cent er of the macula
fovea
has highest spatial acuity
fovea
