How long should be left between two eye drop installations?
5 minutes. Longer if prolonged contact time eg with gels or suspensions. Ointment after drops.
How is nasolacrimal drainage prevented?
Pressure on lacrimal punctum for at least a minute after application
What drugs can have adverse effects on contact lense wearers?
Oral contraceptives (high oestrogen)
Anxiolytics, hypnotics, antihistamines, muscle relaxants (reduce blink rate)
Antimuscarinics, Phenothiazines, beta blockers, diuretics, TCAs (reduce lacrimation)
Ephedrine, hydralazine (increased lacrimation)
Isotretinoin can cause inflammation and aspirin irritation.
What can red eye indicate?
Herpes simplex virus. Corticosteroids can then further damage.
What dangerous effects can occur with steroid use in the eye?
Glaucoma or cataract
What is used in allergic conjunctivitis?
Eye drops with antihistamines eg xylometazoline.
Sodium cromoglicate
Diclofenac in seasonal.
What different formulations are available for dry eye and what are the advantages of ea h?
Hypromellose may need frequent hourly administration. Carbomers Cling so reduce to 4 times daily.
How long after an eye infection clears must eye drops still be used?
48 hours
What drugs are used to dilate pupils for examination and diagnostic?
Antimuscarinics

Which glaucoma is a medical emergency?
Acute angle closure
What advice should be given with acetazolamide?
Blood disorders, rashes occur. Report any unusual skin rash
Which eye drops may cause a change in eye colour?
Prostoglandin analogues
When should apraclonidine eye drops be discontinued?
Eye Pruritis, ocular hyperaemia increased lacrimation, or oedema of eyelids and conjunctiva. Driving may be effected by drowsiness.
What should be monitored following intravitreal injections?
Raised intra ocular pressure
