If you have eyedrops and eye ointments, what do you use first?
Eyedrops first then eye ointment
How long after do eyedrops typically expire?
4 weeks, unless stated
Treatment for allergic conjunctivitis:
Antihistamines and sodium cromoglicate
What can you give for the prophylaxis and treatment of inflammation in allergic conjunctivitis?
NSAID eye drops
What are the symptoms of conjunctivitis?
Gritty eyes, discharge and discharge
What can you give if conjunctivitis does not get better on its own?
Chloramphenicol
What is the alternative to chloramphenicol that can be used in pregnancy?
Fusidic acid
What is the dose of Chloramphenicol?
1 drop every 2 hours for 48 hours
if no difference, see GP
Then, continue for another 3 days 1 drop every 4 hours
Max 5 day use
What is blepharitis?
Chronic condition
Crusting and inflammation of the eyelid
Must practice good hygiene measures
Can give chloramphenicol
What should you give in viral eye infections?
Herpes simplex infection
Use an antiviral like aciclovir and ganiciclovir
Are fungal eye infections rare?
Yes - test it in labs, treatment generally not available. Seek specialist advice
What is glaucoma?
Raised eye pressure
What is the treatment for glaucoma?
Latanoprost
If it doesn’t help then opt for beta blocker
What are the common SE for eye drops?
Don’t normally cause systemic side effects - can cause stinging, itching and discomfort in the eye
What is the caution for prostaglandin eye drops?
Can cause change in iris and lash hair colour
What is anterior uveitis?
Inflammation in the middle of the eye - pupil size will become different
What is the treatment for anterior uveitis?
Prednisolone and dexamethasone (corticosteroid eye drops)
What is subconjunctival haemorrage?
Burst blood vessel in the eye - gets better in time, self limiting
What is keratitis?
Inflammation of cornea and severe pain
Photophobia
Watery discharge
Refer
What are some red flags with the eye
Pain (proper pain, not itching or discomfort)
Photophobia
Poor vision
Pus
Pupil abnormalities
