International rules of the road
Applies to all vessels and seaplanes navigating on the high seas
Inland rules of the road
Applies to all harbors, rivers, and other inland waters
What is overtaking?
One vessel approaches the other from any more than two points (22.5 degrees) abaft of either beam
What is crossing?
When each vessel has the other any place forward of two points abaft of their beam
When is a vessel constrained by draft?
In relation to depth and width of navigable water a vessel is severely restricted in ability to deviate from course
When is a bell used?
Used on any vessel 12 meters or more for sound signals
When is a gong used?
On any vessel 100 meters or more in addition to the bell
What is mean high water?
Average height of all high tides over the last 19 years
What is mean low water?
Average height of all low tides over the last 19 years
What is a spring tide?
Occurs when there is a full moon
- causes higher high tides and lower low tides
What is a neap tide?
Occurs when there is a quarter moon.
- causes lower high and low tides
What is a flood current?
When the horizontal movement of water is toward the shore.
What is an ebb current?
When the horizontal movement of water is away from the shore
What is slack water?
The period of time when there is no current
What is the set?
Direction of the current
