How does urticaria present?
“hives”swollen skin with central pallor and surrounding erythema, typical histamine-induced reaction of urticaria dermal oedema - ‘paeu d’orange’ effect on skin
What causes viral warts?
HPV virus
Treatment of viral warts?
best left to clear spontaneously or freezing with liquid nitrogen
What are the signs of post thrombotic syndrome?
varicose eczema brown pigmentation from haemosiderin depositnarrowing of the skin around the ankle due to sclerosis of the underlying subcutaneous tissue
What are haemosiderin deposits?
when red blood cells that have leaked into the skin are eventually break down
What sort of ulcers are more common?
Venous are 8-10 times commoner than arterial ones
How do you establish allergic or delayed contact dermatitis?
history perform patch testing
What differential should always be considered when looking at ulcers?
biopsy the lesion to check for squamous cell carcinoma
Is an itchy mole likely to be malignant?
not a powerful predictor of malignancy and can occur in benign lesions when they rub against clothing
What are seborrhoea warts?
small yellow scaly papules to older dark brown crusted lesions no malignant potential
How should fungal infection of the toes be treated?
oral griseofulvin or terbafine
What are important features of BCC?
long history pearly margin telangiectasia of the lesion
What are strawberry naevus?
rapid growing bright red polypoid tumour that undergo rapid development size and colour reaches a peak at age of one year and then slowly diminish leaving a pale patch of slightly yellowing redundant skin
What is the diagnosis?Itchy rash around ankles, front of wrists, lower sacrum, white patches in mouth

What is dermographism?
enhanced ability to release histamine in the skin - common in atopic and those who develop urticaria
