Extrahepatic billiary duct Flashcards
Learn anatomy and physiology
Name extrahepatic billiary ducts
Right and left hepatic duct form common hepatic duct.
Cystic duct joins with common hepatic duct to form common bile duct.
Common bile duct has 3 parts: supraduodenal, retroduodenal and intrapancreatic duct.
At ampulla of vater, common bile duct joins with pancreatic duct into the duodenum.
Name gall bladder structures
Gall blader has fundus, body and neck.
What arteries supply common bile duct?
Proximally by right hepatic a. and cystic a. by a 3’ and 9’ oclock patterb.
Distally by pancreatoduodenal aa.
Describe Calot triangle.
Bordered by inf surface of liver, common hepatic duct and cystic duct.
It contains right hepatic a., cystic a. and lymph node of cystic duct.
Secretion of bile is stimulated by…
Vagal stimulation, whereas splanchnic nerve stimulation inhibits.
Secretin stimulates by increasing the secretion of chloride rich fluid. HCl, fatty acids and proteins in duodenum stimulate secretin release.
Cholecystokinin (CCK), gastrin and others also stimulate bile.
Composition of bile
Water, electrolytes, bile salts (cholate and chenodeoxycholate), proteins, lipids and bile pigments.
Function of bile
Aid in digestion and absorption of fats in the intestines.
Color of bile is due to..
Presence of billirubin which is a metabolic product of hemolysis. Once in the intestine, bacteria convert it into urobilinogen.
How is gall bladder able to store up to 600mL of bile each day?
Due to its mucosa, ehich has the greatest absorptive capacity per unit area of any structure in the human body.
Bile is usually concentrated by the absorption of water and electrolytes.
Which 2 important products the epithelial cells of gall bladder produce?
Glycoproteins to protect cell membrane from the bile.
Hydrogen ions which decreases bile pH, preventing the formation of calcium salts.
How is bile transported to gall bladder?
It is filled against the force of a contracted sphincter of Oddi.
When is bile transported to duodenum?
Following a meal, gall bladder contracts due to cagal stimulation, CCK, gastrin and secretin.
CCK inhibits sphincter of Oddi.
