1st step of Iron Extraction

A

Haematite’s crushed & mixed with Carbon & Limestone before transferred into blast furnace

C + 02 -> CO2 (Carbon binds with oxygen to form Carbon Dioxide)

CaCO3 -> CaO + CO2 (Limestone decomposes to form Calcium oxide & Carbon dioxide)

CO2 + C -> 2CO (Carbon Dioxide binds with Carbon to form 2 Carbon monoxide)

2nd step of Iron Extraction

A

Carbon Monoxide reduces Iron Oxide from Haematite to Iron

Fe2O3 + 3CO -> 2Fe + 3CO2

A

Calcium Oxide reacts with impurities (acidic oxides) like silica to form slag (roads & cement)

CaO + SiO2 -> CaSiO3 + CO2
