Extraction of Iron Flashcards
Iron ore
Haematite (Fe2O3)
Ingredients for Iron Extraction
Coke (Carbon): C
Limestone: CaCO3 or Calcium Carbonate
Oxygen: O2
1st step of Iron Extraction
Haematite’s crushed & mixed with Carbon & Limestone before transferred into blast furnace
C + 02 -> CO2 (Carbon binds with oxygen to form Carbon Dioxide)
CaCO3 -> CaO + CO2 (Limestone decomposes to form Calcium oxide & Carbon dioxide)
CO2 + C -> 2CO (Carbon Dioxide binds with Carbon to form 2 Carbon monoxide)
2nd step of Iron Extraction
Carbon Monoxide reduces Iron Oxide from Haematite to Iron
Fe2O3 + 3CO -> 2Fe + 3CO2
3rd step of Iron Extraction
Calcium Oxide reacts with impurities (acidic oxides) like silica to form slag (roads & cement)
CaO + SiO2 -> CaSiO3 + CO2
