Extracting Metals Using Carbon Flashcards
1
Q
What is a metal ore?
A
A rock which contains enough metal to make it economically worthwhile extracting the metal from it.
In many cases the ore is an oxide of the metal.
2
Q
What are uncombined elements?
A
Unreactive metals (e.g. gold or platinum) that are present in the Earth's crust, and can be mined straight out of the ground. However, they do need to be refined before they can be used.
3
Q
What happens when an ore is reduced?
A
Oxygen is removed
4
Q
How are metals higher than carbon in the RS extracted?
A
Using electrolysis.
5
Q
How are metals below carbon in the RS extracted?
A
By reduction using carbon.
6
Q
WHY are metals below carbon in the RS extracted by reduction using carbon?
A
Because carbon can only take the oxygen away from metals which are less reactive than carbon itself is.
