My first point is that Shelley depicts the effects of Frankenstein’s desire for revenge through the body. Shelley conveys this through “But revenge kept me alive’’ The explicit use of the noun “revenge” highlights his desire for retribution.

Hence, when coupled with “kept me alive” creates a hyperbolic metaphor which takes an abstract noun and conveys it as a concrete noun. This emphasises that like food Frankenstein’s need for revenge can keep the body working even as the mind crumbles, emphasising that the desire for revenge is Frankenstein’s sole reason for living.

Gris Grimly reinforces the ramifications of desire through the illustration of Frankenstein’s body. On panel 2 Grimly uses a point of view angle to immerse the reader. The use of rule of thirds emphasises Frankenstein’s failing facial features as he withers in age.

The progression of his failing bodily image gives connotations of a ‘beggar’ contrasting his wealthy upbringing; this emphasises how his life has been destroyed by the ramifications of his lust for revenge.

Therefore, Grimly illustrates a commentary on revenge by portraying Frankenstein as a ‘slave’ to his desires emphasising that he has neither positive nor negative liberty when consumed by desire .

Furthermore, Shelley portrays how one of the outcomes of greed is, burden, Frankenstein carries his desires almost like it’s his duty.
Emphasised through “I dared not die” which conveys both the fear and guilt that Frankenstein has towards his creation, creating a unique emotional response causing the reader to pity the creature.

This reinforces Frankenstein’s lust for revenge as a burden. Creating a stark juxtaposition to what his fatherly duty should embody.

Shelley reinforces this through religious imagery found in “my eternal hell” which conveys that Frankenstien’s desire for revenge is infinite. The abstract noun in “hell” effectively immerses the reader allowing them to understand Frankenstein’s suffering in his ‘eternal’ search for revenge.

Finally, Grimly portrays Frankenstein’s desires on panel 3 and 4, the contrasting colour palette emphasises the change in night and day. When coupled with a scene to scene progression Grimly illustrates how time passes in a blink of an eye, alluding to how long Frankenstein has been seeking revenge for his dead wife.

In Panel 3 Frankenstein is portrayed as fading away, similar to a ghost. This is reinforced through progression on panel 4 where Frankenstein is hooded,

Grimly uses allusion to portray him as the Grim Reaper, the embodiment of death alluding to how his sole purpose for living is to take life.
This emphasises that as a consequence, what was a young man driven by the arrogance to fulfil his desire to minion over the creation life, is now left only with his failing mortality.
