Extra Wokrsheet Flashcards
Species
A group of living organism consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding
Speciation
Process by which new species arise
Biological species concept
A group of organisms that can successfully interbreed and produce fertile offspring
Types of speciation
Allopatric, Sympatric, Adaptive radiation, cladogenesis, anagenesis, punctuated equilibrium, and gradualism.
Cladogenesis
A species splits into 2 or more daughter species
Anagenesis
Change within a particular linage over time
Allopatric speciation
Speciation that occurs when biological populations of the same species become isolated due to geographical changes.
What effects work under allopatric speciation?
Founder effect, Vicariance Effect, Loss or intermediates
Founder effect
Form of genetic drift where a small group of dispersers colonize and area and that new population may or may not be representative of the older population.
Vicariance effect
Ancestral population is split apart by barriers
Loss of intermediates
Extinction of connecting populations
Sympatric speciation
Form of speciation where a new species evolves from a single ancestral species while in having the same geographical area.
Adaptive radiation
Represents closely related species all descended from a common ancestor, each adapted to a particular environment.
Punctuated Equilibrium
Changes are abrupt and happen all at once
Gradualism
Change is slow and continuous over time
