The control group
Is the group not exposed to the independent variable
The experimental group
Is the group exposed to the independent variable
Random allocation
Is when participants are allocated to experimental and control groups with each participant having an equal chance of being in either group eg. Coin toss
Variable
Any event, characteristic or behaviour that can change over time
Extraneous variables
Is any variable, other than the IV that can cause a change in the DV and therefor affect the results of the experiment in an unwanted way
Sample
Participants who are chosen
Biased sample
Is not accurate because it does not reflect the whole population
Representative sample
Is one that matches or accurately reflects the important characteristics of the population from which it is drawn
Population
Group of people in which a sample is selected
Generalisations
Judgements about how wide the search results can be applied to people beyond the sample
Survey
Is a research method used to collect data, which involves asking participants to respond to a set of questioms
Behaviour observations
Clinical psychologist gains information about client through their verbal and non verbal behaviour
Data
Information collected about the behaviour of the person/s studied
Qualitative
Data that is of verbal nature of interest e.g. Survey
Quantitative
Data that is measured using numbers
