External Sling Load Operations Flashcards
1
Q
External Load operations:
-High density loads:
A
- Best stability
- Can usually be flown at cruise speeds and in some cases, up to Vne.
2
Q
External Load Operations:
-Low density Loads
A
- Least stable
- Airspeed is limited by amount of clearance which can be maintained between the load and the underside of the helicopter.
- Load will tend to trail aft as speed is increased.
3
Q
External load operations:
-Aerodynamic loads
A
- Unstable until load streamlining occurs
- Inherent dangers from lift capabilities
- Lift must be eliminated prior to being lifted
- Airspeed and bank angles will be governed by the reactions of the load.
- Drogue chutes shall be used to streamline the load.
4
Q
External load operations:
-Two distinct phases of takeoff:
A
- Lifting the load to a hover
- Slow vertical ascent until sling becomes taut and centered
- Aircrew coordination to ensure aircraft does not drift from over the load
- Lifted to appropriate hover height and power check performed
- Takeoff
- Smooth acceleration and takeoff
- Sufficient power is applied (not to exceed limits)
- Safe climb altitude = load is unquestionably clear of the highest barrier.
5
Q
3 categories of external loads:
A
-High density, Low density, Aerodynamic
