EXTERIOR FINISHES Flashcards
What is the first thing that roofing underlayment does for a building?
It protects the structure from rain, allowing it to dry, and be ready for interior finishes
What is the most common roofing underlayment?
Building felt… Made of matted cellulose saturated with asphalt
What is the difference between eaves and rakes?
Eaves are horizontal roof edges and rakes are sloping roof edges
Why are internal gutters rare?
They are difficult to waterproof and leaks can cause a lot of damage
How much vertical wall and a roof overhang protect?
They can protect the wall about is twice as tall as the overhang is deep
How to form a ice dam
Allow interior air to melt snow on the roof… Then it slides down to the overhang weren’t re-freezes because there is no interior air to keep it warm
What is the difference between the vehicle, the solvent, the pigment, and the additive?
The vehicle, or binder, provides adhesion to the substrate forming a film over it.
Solvents improve the working property is the paint coating. Water and hydrocarbons… Also turpentine, alcohols etc.
Pigments add color capacity and gloss. Impacting hardness weatherability and abrasion resistance.
An example of an additive would be a dryer that hastens curing… Or resistance to fading or something else
What are enamels?
Paints with high gloss and a low proportion of pigment … Hard and shiny
What are stains?
They contain little vehicle or pigment by developing a hybrid portion of solvent and dye additive
What is a lacquer? What is shellac?
A lacquer is a clear coating that dries extremely quickly by solvent evaporation. Hey varnish drive slower, hardening by oxidation.
Shellac is a clear coating for interior use, made from secretions of a certain Asian insect dissolved in alcohol.
Shellac dries quickly with a fine finish but it is very susceptible to damage by water or alcohol
What is the advantage of furring strips between the house wrap and the exterior siding?
A place for leaks to drain, airspace to allow the siding to dry.
In which orientation can you install tongue and groove siding?
Vertical or horizontal
In which orientation can you install board and batten siding?
Only vertical
In which orientation can you install shiplap or bevel siding?
Only horizontal
Why does all plywood siding need to be painted or stained?
It’s veneers are too thin to withstand whether erosion for more than a few years
