Why are some countries ‘switched off’ untouched by globalisation.
Physical geography- e.g. physical isolation due to mountain belts/deserts
Political decisions - e.g. countries may favour nationalist policies
Lack of economic development - e.g. poverty may stop a country being able 2 trade competitively
Environmental resilience - e.g, countries may be highly vulnerable 2 climate change - may limit their ability to trade cash crops
North Korea largely ‘switched off’ from globalisation
Country has pursued an isolationist, socialist regime - pursuit of isolationism means connections w/ other countries through trade + politics are v restricted
Country’s economy = based on ideology of self sufficiency which concentrates the production of goods on the immediate needs of its citizens rather than on making trade connections with countries
NK has limited physical communication connections w/ other countries (internet cabling) = restrict people’s exposure to info + ideas from overseas
What has NK done to allow some external influences
Since a period = famine + rapid economic downturn = 1990s NK has appealed for + accepted international aid from capitalist economies e.g. SK + USA
2 Korean countries competed together in a unified team = some sporting events including ice hockey = 2018 Winter Olympics
2018 NK leader Kim Jong-Un met President Donald Trump at a summit = Singapore where they committed to a partial denuclearisation of NK + lifting of some sanctions
