Extension Service Flashcards
1
Q
what are the objectives of the UofS poultry extension
A
- monitor industry performance
- identify and solve industry problems
- investigate individual production problems
- communicate advances in poultry production
- act as a liaison to individuals supplying feed, medication and equipment into the poultry industry
2
Q
what is salmonella
A
- bacteria that lives in the intestinal tract of humans, animals and other critters
- not a normal gut bug and can cause disease over 2500 dif types
- 39% of pathogenic isolates identified in canada 2022
23% in sask (viruses 35%, campylobacter 18% and parasites 14%)
3
Q
what does salmonella in layer chickens looks like
A
- chickens with salmonella may not show signs of disease
- most types of salmonella contaminate the outer egg shell
4
Q
what is salmonella enteritidis
A
- overall contamination = infects egg ad without proper storage they get contaminated
- can also contaminate the reproductive tract of hens
5
Q
what does salmonella do to eggs
A
- salmonella infections have been linked to eating eggs, especially raw, or lightly cooked
- robust monitoring for SE in egg industry to protect public health and maintain consumer confidenc
6
Q
what is the EFCs national SE policy
A
- environment is tested 3 times : P (pullet) L1 (young layers) L2 (old layers)
- flocks with SE positive are depopulated
- eggs at graders are diverted
- interconnectivity to other flocks is assessed
- mandatory vaccination at replacement
7
Q
how can we prevent salmonella
A
- source from SE free breeder flocks, hatcheries and pullet sources
- rodent and fly control
- biosecurity, cleaning and disinfecting
- vaccination program ( 100% US flocks are vaccinated, sporatic in canada)
- consult with vetrinarian
- based on farm history
8
Q
what causes histomoniasis (blackhead)
A
- a parasitic worm
9
Q
what causes infectious coryza
A
- bacteria
- transports between farms
- it lasts forever and will be carriers until they die
10
Q
what causes fowl cholera
A
- bacteria through mice
11
Q
what causes avian metapneumovirus
A
- virus
- swollen wattles and sinus infections
12
Q
what ways can you improve biosecurity
A
- invest in a effective set - up (danish entery)
- intervene ( when you see biosecurity breaches)
- lead by example
13
Q
what are biosecurity improvements
A
- fencing for bedding storage, deadstock and manuer storage
- water treatment monitoring equipment
- commercial sweeper (walk behind/battery powered)
- mobile sanitation equipment
- how water pressure washer (over 3000 psi)
- hand/boot wash stations
14
Q
what are animal welfare imporvements
A
- alarm and lighting controllers
- light bulbs
- video monitors
- light intensity meters
- cage enrichment items and ramps
- hanging weigh scales
- air quality sensing equipment
- euthanasia devises
- hot weather management equipment
15
Q
what are lightin requirements
A
- auditor has a light meter (light intesity measured at feeders
- 2 readings per level per teir directly under bulbs and between bulbs
- average of all the readings
