He was self-taught. As composer, his method of organizing his music was the use of semi-tone scale which is 12 different chromatic tones, which was greatly influenced by the modern technique and development.

His most popular expressionist composition is the PIERROT LUNAIRE Op.21 he applied the style called SPRECHSTIMME – speech song.
