Explanations Of The Success And Failure Of Dieting Flashcards
Wardle & Beales
Supports restraint theory. Found that restraint causes over eating. Women were placed in 1 of 3 groups and tested at regular intervals for 7 weeks.
1) diet
2) exercise
3) control
Found that the diet group actually consumed the most.
Wegner’s White Bear
Participants were instructed to not think about a white bear for 5 mins but found it only made them think of it more. Supports role of denial
Redden’s Jelly Beans
Gave participants 22 jelly beans each. When each bean was given information was provided, either general (jelly bean 7) or specific (cherry jelly bean). Found participants got bored more quickly when just given general info. Suggesting variety and attention to detail are key to success of dieting.
