explanations of attachment : bowlbys theory Flashcards
Bowbly (1969)
evolutionary theory. suggested that attachment is a vital adaptive quality that has evolved to increase chances of survival though proximity seeking. attachment and imprinting is innate.
what is monotropy?
the idea that infants need one special emotional bond to an attachment figure to ensure good child development. this is their strongest bond, they use this as a safe base for exploring
what are social releasers?
innate behaviours that promote reaction, e.g. smiling, eye contact, crying, etc. maintains close contact between infant and CG
what is the critical period?
the time in which and infants attachments take place, when their attachment system is most sensitive. for humans 6-30 months/ 2.5 years. if a child doesn’t attach in this period, attachment will become very difficult
what is internal working theory?
mental template/representations of attachment based on early attachment experiences
what is continuity hypothesis?
idea that there is consistency between early attachment
