caregiver-infant interactions Flashcards
what is meant by attachment?
a two way emotional bond between tow individuals, usually mother/primary caregiver and child.
what is meant by caregiver infant interactions?
meaningful interactions between infants and caregivers that help a childs social development
what is meant by reciprocity?
intense interactions that are mutual and involve turn taking, both taking an active role in communications and interactions, eliciting reponses from one another. babies have alert phases in whcih they signal readiness for interaction. occurs from birth.
Feldman (2007)
from around 3 months reciprocity tends to become increasingly frequent and ivolves both CG and infant paying close attention to each others verbal signals and facial expressions.
what is meant by interactional synchrony?
caregiver and infant reflect both the actions and emotions of one another in a synchronised way.
Meltzoff and Moore (1977)
interactional synchrony starts as ealy as 2 weeks old. adults displayed different facial expressions or gestures & babies mirrored these actions more than chance could predict.
isabella et al. (1989)
observed 30 mothers & babies together anmd assessed degree of synchrony. high levels of synchrony were associated with better quality attahcments.
-AO3 - low external validity
babies have limited coordination and mobility, movements recorded are very subtle. it is difficult to be sure te action is not jus a random movement.
+AO3 - high internal validity
research for CGI interaction usually takes place in a lab. Highly controlled, filmed observations mean key details are less liekly to be missed.
-AO3 - doesn’t show developmental research (Feldman (2012))
reciprocity and IS only give names to patterns of observable CG and infant interations, doesn’t tell us the purpose of interactions.
+AO3 - CA Isabella et al.
Isabellas research showed that IS is important for better quality attachments.
