Explanations of attachment: Bowlby's Theory Flashcards
what does monotropic mean
indicates that one particular attachment is different from all others and of central importance to a child’s development
what did Bowlby suggest about explanantion of attachment
attachment innate system and gives survival advantage. So attachment evolved as a mechanism to keep young animals safe by ensuring they stay close to adult caregivers
why is Bowlby’s theory described as monotropic
because he placed great emphasis attachment to one particular caregiver
what did Bowlby believe about childs attachment to a specific caregiver
it is different and more important than others, Bowlby called this person the mother but it was clear that the more time a baby spent with this mother-figure - or primary attachment figure
what principle did Bowlby put forward
-The law of continuity stated that the more constant and predictable a Childs care the better quality of their attachment
-The law of accumulated separation stated that the effects of every separation from the mother add up and safest dose is therefore a zero dose ( Bowlby 1975)
what are social releasers
babies are born with a set innate cute behaviours to encourage attention from adults
what are the purpose of social releasers
purpose to activate adult social interaction and so make an adult attached to a baby
what did Bowlby propose about the critical period
critical period around 6 months when the infant attachment system is active. In fact Bowlby viewed this as more sensitive period. A child is maximally sensitive at six months and this possibly extends up to the age of two
what is internal working model
Bowlby proposed that a child forms a mental representation of their primary attachment figure. I t is called internal working model because serves as model for what a relationship is like
what will be the expectation of a child whose first experience is of loving relationship with reliable caregiver are like
will form an expectation that all relationships are loving and reliable they will bring these qualities to future relationships
what does the internal working model affect the child
later ability to be a parent themselves
