Explanations For Conformity Flashcards
1
Q
What is informational social influence (ISI)
A
Says we agree with the opinion of the majority because we believe that it is correct. We accept it because we also want to be correct
2
Q
What is normative social influence (NSI)
A
We agree with the majority because we want to be accepted, gain social approval and be liked.
3
Q
Research support for ISI
A
Lucas et al (2006)
- maths questions
- greater conformity to incorrect answers to difficult questions rather than easy
- proves that students wanted to be right
4
Q
Individual differences in NSI
A
Research suggests that NSI does not affect everyone’s behaviour.
- only affect people who desire to be liked more
- nAffiliators
- these people have a greater need for affiliation
Conformity is dependent on individual differences
5
Q
ISI and NSI work together
A
Asch experiment
- NSI and ISI work together
- conformity is reduced when there is one other dissenting participant
- dissenter may reduce power of NSI (provides social support)
- may reduce power of ISI (alternative source of information)
