Internalisation

Fit in with the social norms and values to gain approval of group
In order to not stand out or appear different
Which type of conformity is NSI?
Compliance
Research support for ISI:
Lucas et al
Lucas et al (2006):
Participants conformed more when the maths problems were difficult compared to when maths problems were considered easier due to students not knowing the answer and not wanting to appear wrong
Research support for NSI:
Asch
Asch (1951):
Participants claimed they gave the wrong answer, even when they knew it was wrong as they felt self-conscious and did not want to go against the group and gain disapproval
Individual differences not considered:
Not everyone is affected by ISI and NSI in the same way.
Some people do not wish to fit in with a group, due to their personality- these explanations do not account for this.
