A
- can occur within groups or institutions such as prisons or mental institutions
- most of the research seeks to explain whether is it cause because of situational or dispositional factors

A
- the importation model
- violence within institutions is a result of people bringing it in from their previous lives
- prisons are violent places because the people within prisons have brought about their violent past and tendencies tend to be violent with them
