Expiratory Muscle Training Flashcards
What is the primary goal of Expiratory Muscle Training?
Activate and strengthen expiratory muscles.
What is involved with EMST?
The patient exhales into a device that has been set to create resistance. The patient has to exhale strong enough to open a spring-loaded valve.
What is the desired outcome of EMST?
That the patient will increase their ability to generate enough expiratory pressure to produce voice and speech production while reducing the physiologic effort.
Who is EMST for?
Speech, swallowing, voice patients with hypofunctional or hyperfunctinoal voice use
Pediatrics
Patients with neurogenic disorders
Most commonly, Parkinson’s patients
Which muscles are involved in EMST?
Abdominals and interior intercostals
How often should EMST be practiced?
5 sets a day (~20 mins), 5 days a week for 4-5 weeks
