Experoments Flashcards
Detect presence of chloride ions in aqueous solutions
Add silver nitrate
And a white precipitation forms
Detect sulfate and sulfite
And to distinguish between them
Add barium chloride
White precipitation is formed
Distinguish
Then add HCl
•white precipitation remains in sulfate
•white precipitation goes in sulfite
Detect carbonate ion and hydrocarbons the ions in aqueous solutions
And distinguish between the two
Add dilute HCl and CO2 is formed
This makes limewater milky
Distinguish:
Add magnesium sulfate (MgSO4)
- white precipitation in carbonate
- no white precipitation in hydrocarbonate
Detect nitrate
Brown ring test
Nitrate salt is added in deionized water and then iron sulfate is added
Using a dropper add sulfuric acid H2SO4
At an angle making is do down into the bottom of the testtube
A brown ring is formed
Detect phosphate
Phosphate salt is dissolved in deionised water
Ammonium molydate is added
With a dropper add nitric acid and place in warm water
A yellow precipitation is formed
Radioactivity
Spontaneous breaking up of a unstable nuclei with the emission of one or more types of radiation
