What was Rosenhans experiment
‘pseudopatient’ experiment
. Researchers were admitted into 12 hospitals in California saying they were hearing voices
. Once in acted normal but still treated as if they were ill
. Suggests label made staff act differently not the illnessitself
Mayos’ experiment
Began research into factors affecting productivity at Western Electric companies Hawthorne Plant
Volunteers knew it was an experiment so productivity improved when he improved and worsened conditions
Durkheims Study
Hypothesis = low levels of integration from a social group is what caused high rates of suicide
Predicted = protestants rates would be higher than catholics
Compared suicide rates of catholics and protestants who were similar in all other aspects
Harvey and Stalin
. Examined whether teachers had preconceived ideas about pupils of different social classes
. Teachers based their decisions on teachers on pupils they had already taught - WC rated less favourably
. Indicates teachers label pupils and use these to pre-judge potential
Charkin et al
. Sample of 48 uni students who each taught a lesson to 10 year old boy
. Found those in high expectancy group made more eye contact, gave more encouraging body language than low expectancy group
Mason
. Looked at whether negative or positive expectations had the greatest effect
. Found negative reports had a much greater impact than the positive ones on teacher expectations
