experimental method Flashcards
what is an aim?
a general statement that describes the purpose of an investigation
what is a hypothesis?
a precise and testable statement of what the researchers predict will be the outcome of a study. contains both the IV and DV.
directional hypothesis
states the direction of the difference or correlation (one-tailed)
non-directional hypothesis
does not state the direction of the difference or correlation (two-tailed)
independent variable
the variable that the researcher manipulates
dependent variable
the variable that the researcher measures. it is affected by the manipulation of the IV
operationalising variables
how a variable is defined by the researcher and the way in which it is measured for the purpose of the research
operationalised hypothesis example
“after drinking 300ml of energetic drink, participants say more words in the next 5 minutes than participants who drink 300ml of water”
