experimental designs Flashcards
what is repeated measures
all ppts take part in all conditions of the experiment
what is matched pairs
ppts are matched closely with another ppts based on a specific thing
what is independent groups
ppts are randomly allocated to one condition only
advantages of repeated measures
all ppts receive all levels of the IV
compare ppts performance on 2 tests
advantages of independent groups
ppts placed in separate independent groups. Each group does one level of the IV
advantages of matched pairs
reduces ppt variables (individual differences) which increases internal validity
disadvantages of repeated measures
when they do the second test they may get the purpose of the test which will change their behaviour
disadvantages of independent groups
researcher cannot control the effects of ppt variables
disadvantages of matched pairs
very time consuming
difficult to match ppts on key variables
how to limit the disadvantages of repeated measures
a cover story can be presented about the purpose of the test
how to limit the disadvantages of independent groups
randomly allocate ppts to conditions which theoretically distribute ppt variables evenly
how to limit the disadvantages of matched pairs
restrict number of variables to match on to make it easier
what are order effects
depending on the order you do your conditions will change your results
