Experimental Design Flashcards
What is repeated measures design?
Same conditions for all ppts
What is matched pairs design?
Different, but similar participants used in each condition
How would ppts be allocated in independent groups design?
Randomly allocated to remove experimenter bias
2 strengths of independent groups design
1) no risk of practice effects
2) less likely to show demand characteristics
Two disadvantages of independent groups design
No control of individual differences/ participant variables
Twice as many ppts are needed
Two advantages of repeated measures design
Partcipant variables are controlled
More economical
2 disadvantages of repeated measures design
Order/ practice effects
Demand characteristics
What is meant by counterbalancing?
Reduces order effects, balance out any unwanted effects caused by ppts doing one condition after another
Two strengths of matched participants design
Attempts to tackle participant variables
No order or practice effects
Two disadvantages to matched participants design
Difficult and time consuming
Won’t completely remove possible effect of individual differences
What is independent groups design?
Different participants used in each condition
