Experimental Design Flashcards
what is repeated measures design
one single group of participants perform all the conditions of the experiment, a comparison is made between a single participants score on one condition to the other
strengths of repeated measures design
- same individuals so when comparing results there are no participant variables
- smaller sample so cheaper and easier
limitations of repeated measures design
- order effects
- demand characteristics as they are more likely to workout the aims of the experiment by being in both conditions
what is independent groups design
different groups of participants each perform one condition of the IV and the scores of one group in one condition are compared to those in the other
strengths of independent groups design
- demand characteristics and order effects are less likely as the participants only take part in one condition
limitations of independent groups design
- larger sample required which is more costly and time consuming
- participant variables
what is matched pairs design
where you air your participants up on a certain characteristics which is believed to affect the performance on the DV, each person from the pair does one condition and results are compared to their partner
strengths of matched pairs design
- reduced participant variables
- no order effects
limitations of matched pairs design
- most time consuming design
- larger sample required
- there will still be participant variables
