Aims and Hypotheses Flashcards
what is an aim
a clearly phrased general statement about what the investor intends to research
what is a hypothesis
a precis testable statement including the levels of IV and DV
what is operationalisation
the act of clearly defining the variables so they are measurable/changeable
what is a null hypothesis
when you predict there will be no difference or association between the measurement of the DV as a result of manipulation of the IV
what is an alternative hypothesis
states that there is a change in the measurement of the DV as a result of the manipulation of the IV
what is hypothesis testing
when data is collected and statistical testing is conducted on it to provide evidence which will either support or reject the alternative hypothesis
what is a non-directional hypothesis
aka two-tailed predicts there will be a difference or relationship between 2 conditions
what is a directional hypothesis
aka one tailed states the kind of difference or relationship expected between 2 conditions
when to use a directional hypothesis
when there is previous research so you know what to expect
when to use a non-directional hypothesis
when there is no previous research or previous studies have conflicting results
