Experimental Design Flashcards
What is meant by experimental design
The way participants are allocated to experimental groups of an investigation
What is experimental design often confused with
Experimental methods
What is independent group design
Each participant is exposed to the differant IVs (experimental condition) take part in one condition only
-they’re randomly allocated
How are participants randomly allocated
-put list of names in a hat, random name generator, assign groups by names said
What is a repeated measure design
-The same participants complete two or more experimental conditions
-theyre selected for both groups
Negatives to a repeated measures design
-Demand characteristics
-Order effect
Positives to repeated measures design
-participants extraneous variables are controlled for
-counterbalancing= one group does the conditions in one order and the other group do the same conditions but in a different order
-less participants needed
What is a matched pairs design
Different participants complete in each of the two or more conditions of the experiment. Participants are first assessed then ranked on characteristic
Positives to a matched pairs design
-Demand characteristics and order effect have less impact as participants only take part in a single condition
- participants extraneous variables are reduced
Negatives to a matched pairs design
- although there is a decrease in participants variables the participants cannot be matched
